FORMULATION OF A NEW CONSUMER PRODUCT (COSMETICS, PERFUMES, CLEANERS, DRUGS, FOODS, HERBS, SUPPLEMENTS, PAINTS, COATINGS, CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, ETC.)
(1) Select at least one typical consumer product and obtain MSDS information for the product. Review and compare all available literature, specification sheets, price information, directions, claims, and packaging. Our fee: $300.00 Client can also do the review and forward results to laboratory
(2) Evaluate the product based on the MSDS and label information to determine if the product has components likely to be most effective, be less toxic, and have lower cost. Fee: ca. $150.00.
(3) Test the product and run appropriate performance tests of the formula. Fees to be determined.
(4) Evaluate the performance results and, if good, conduct a deformulation by separations and chemical analysis to determine the ingredients and their levels. Deformulations of complex mixtures usually cost $1500.00 or more.
(5) If needed, evaluate the stability of the product and conduct an accelerated stability test at 30 deg. C. and 88% relative humidity for 30 days. Organoleptic, microbiological, or other tests are conducted. A fee of $300.00 generally charged.
(6) Formulate a small quantity (e.g. 1 pint) and conduct a performance test to compare with the previous test results. The first trial formulation will typically cost $300.00 plus cost of any expensive ingredients.
(7) If required, refine the formula and repeat the performance test.
(8) Client should evaluate color, odor, viscosity, etc. and review performance data.
(9) Using the final refined formula, run all required physical tests and prepare the MSDS form using the OSHA format. (Fee: $400.00)
(10) Prepare suggested list of warnings, cautions, toxicities, directions, disclaimers, expiration date, and safety information to place on the package. (Fee: ca. $300.00) Product Formulation, Reformulation, and Deformulation. We will work with you to create a custom formula which will be your proprietary property. We can deformulate existing formulas and generally create a close copy of the formula or, in some cases, improve the formula. Some of the techniques that we utilize to deformulate products are wet chemistry, rotary evaporation, distillation, thin layer chromatography, paper chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy, column chromatography, gas chromatography with FID, gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy, ion chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, fouriet transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, visible and ultraviolet spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma, energy dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, chrystallography, fluorimetry, polarimetry, refractometry and many others. Our minimum fee for a simple
deformulation
is $700.00. Add $100.00 or more for each ingredient above 4 in the
product. Also we can also make a small trial batch for your evaluation. Our laboratory offers the following testing services:
Complete chemical analysis to deformulate (reverse engineer) any type of
consumer product, such as cosmetic, health, and beauty aids, food and food
supplements, cleaners and detergents, paint and construction products, and
more.
